Light Distribution

Learn how light distribution adjusts shadow brightness while preserving shape, depth, and natural light direction.

Photo Editing Variable

Light Distribution

Light Distribution controls how much the dark areas are lifted relative to the bright areas. It does not remove shadows; shadows remain important for shape and depth.

Visual comparison

Compare the Levels

Light Distribution Level 0

Maximum contrast

Level 0

Keeps a strong difference between light and dark areas, making the primary light direction very clear.

Light Distribution Level 1

Slight shadow lift

Level 1

Gently brightens dark areas so more detail is visible while preserving strong light direction.

Light Distribution Level 2

Balanced exposure

Level 2

Brings larger dark areas closer to the general image brightness without making the result look flat.

Light Distribution Level 3

High distribution

Level 3

Brightens smaller dark areas and object shadows while keeping the main light source visible.

Light Distribution Level 4

Maximum distribution

Level 4

Evens out light and dark areas as much as possible. This extreme level is unsuitable for many styles.
